I think you hit the nail on the head, though: an author's unique 'voice' is what sets them apart from the rest. I love this quote from Jim Jarmusch on the issue of stealing / drawing inspiration from others' work:<br /><br />"Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery - celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from - it’s where you take them to”.”Luke Raftlhttp://www.allyourstarsareout.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7516172863710781538.post-18273083636990070362011-02-10T21:27:03.515-05:002011-02-10T21:27:03.515-05:00This is true. This is true.MBeehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17325522661963443320noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7516172863710781538.post-68247163176763432922011-02-10T20:11:50.911-05:002011-02-10T20:11:50.911-05:00Plus if we gave up because of lack of originality ...Plus if we gave up because of lack of originality then the world would come to a near stand still.Patricia JLhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17582005500429122486noreply@blogger.com
